James Densley, PhD



James Densley, PhD James Densley, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Metropolitan State University, part of the Minnesota State system. He has received several awards and local, national, and international media attention for his work on street gangs, criminal networks, violence, and policing. Densley is the author of two books - Minnesota's Criminal Justice System (Carolina Academic Press, 2016) and How Gangs Work: An Ethnography of Youth Violence (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and over 20 refereed articles and book chapters in leading social science outlets. He has also written for CNN, MinnPost, Star Tribune, and other publications. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate of the Extra-Legal Governance Institute at the University of Oxford, where he earned his Ph.D. in sociology.
