Robert L. Karol, Ph.D., L.P., ABPP, CBIST

Dr. Karol is President of a group practice, Karol Neuropsychological Services & Consulting, specializing in program development consultation, workshops & staff training, counseling for persons with brain injury, neuropsychological evaluations, and case consultation for providers, insurers, and attorneys.

His Organizational Consultation services include interviews to define current function, barriers, opportunities; retreats to refine direction; administrative advising; ongoing consultation; and workshops. Example consultation targets include team models; staff development; new service exploration; leadership development and mentoring; burnout and compassion fatigue; and boundary issues and staff behavior. Clinical Consultation includes case reviews; on-going case consultation; and behavior professional consultation. Possible targets include challenging families and resolution of issues; and behavior management. Staff Training and Conference Presentations (Plenary, Breakouts, Workshops) - more than 350 - range from behavioral dyscontrol, de-escalation techniques, and the implications of adjustment and cognitive issues to brain injury for lawyers, case managers, correctional officers, educators, etc. to cognitive rehabilitation principles, compassion fatigue, counseling, grief, neuropsychological assessment, conceptualizing disability, team models, etc. Clinical Services entail counseling for people with brain injury and their families and neuropsychological evaluations. Dr. Karol is Board Certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology as a Rehabilitation Psychologist and is Certified by the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists as a Trainer. He received the American Psychological Association Rehabilitation Division Lifetime Practice Excellence Award for "excellence in clinical practice and contributions to the field of rehabilitation psychology" and the Cifu Lecturer Award for "distinguished contributions to the field of brain injury" from the VCU School of Medicine.

He is the American Psychological Association's Board of Professional Affairs Rehabilitation Division Liaison. He co-founded the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance (past Board Chair) and is on the Board of Directors of the United States Brain Injury Alliance. He served on Mayo Clinic's TBI Model Systems Regional Advisory Council and the Minnesota Department of Corrections Traumatic Brain Injury Expert Advisory Panel and provided consultation services to the Minnesota Department of Corrections. He is the 2017-18 Vice Chair of the Minnesota Department of Human Services Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Committee and will Chair the Committee beginning in 2018. He has served on the Supreme Court of Minnesota Board of Law Examiners Special Test Accommodation Panel. He has also served on Minnesota Psychological Association committees including Payor Committee, Statewide Referral Service Advisory Committee, and Hospital/Medical Psychology Committee. He is an Adjunct Professor at Argosy University. He is also a member of the Minnesota Academy of Medicine.

He has authored four books: Neuropsychosocial Intervention: The Practical Treatment of Severe Behavioral Dyscontrol After Acquired Brain Injury; Overcoming Grief and Loss after Brain Injury; Therapists' Guide to Grief and Loss after Brain Injury; and Behavior Plan Workbook: How to Conceptualize and Treat Behaviors after Brain Injury. Other publications include book chapters and invited articles: Principles of Behavioral Analysis and Treatment; Issues in Consultation; Neurobehavioral Crisis Hospitalization: On the Need to Provide Specialized Hospital Brain Injury Crisis Programming; Team Models in Neurorehabilitation: Structure, Function, and Culture Change, etc.
